9 Tips for suitable running clothes (all year round)

Short-short or long-long?

What may sound like asking for your new haircut at first, is actually aimed at something different: Running clothes. Namely, the perfect running clothes for your next workout.

In this article we explain what you should look for when choosing your sports outfit, especially to be dressed appropriately for the season.

This much in advance: with a few simple rules of thumb, you can find the right running clothes for any weather.

Why the right running clothes are so important

It sounds banal, but:

The right clothing is primarily not a question of style, but also has a direct impact on performance and well-being.

In all seriousness: Hypothermia, chafing sores and blisters are not to be trifled with and the body should not already be pushed to its limits with the inappropriate choice of running clothes.

General tips for choosing the right running clothes

Let's start with some general tips for choosing the right running clothes for your next run.

Here we go.

Tip 1: Running clothes should not be too loose.

Our first tip for the right running clothes aims at the fit of your outfit.

In general, running clothes should not be too loose. The reason: too loose running clothes can cause cold air to collect between the layers and cool down the body. On the other hand, there is a risk that you will - you have certainly heard the expression before - "run a wolf". Sore spots develop. That hurts and does not have to be.

Tip 2: Avoid cotton shirts and too warm clothes when jogging.

You probably know it: special shirts for jogging advertise breathability and aerodynamic fit. Quickly, our advertising filter kicks in and we stop listening.

But:
In fact, you shouldn't choose the next best cotton shirt when looking for the right clothes for jogging.

There's a simple reason for that: if you wear a shirt made of cotton while running, it will soak up sweat.

The shirt becomes heavy because the sweat can't evaporate. In addition, it continuously draws heat away from your body. A cooling effect while running is not bad per se, but to the extent of a cotton shirt it leads to you cooling down too much.

Tip 3: Running jacket when jogging with wind and rain

The sports world has also come up with something for rainy or very windy days: Ultralight running jackets.

They have two advantages:
1. they protect you from the wind driving right into your bones should a gust hit you while running.
2. they keep rain away from your actual running clothes and thus ensure that your body is not additionally burdened with wetness.

While a light wind can be endured without a jacket, you should avoid running in the rain without one, especially in winter.

Important here: It should be light and flexible, so be sure to do small movement exercises when trying it on.

Tip 4: Suitable running shoes

Anyone who has ever experienced uncomfortable running shoes knows how important the right footwear is to have fun while running.

To avoid blisters and joint pain, the right shoes are the key.

Running shoes should be comfortable and tailored to the physical conditions and athletic goals.

The reason:
In fact, there are big differences in the make, depending on what exactly you plan to do. We recommend here a consultation in a specialty store, where you can choose the individually suitable shoe.

Suitable running clothes for winter (and sub-zero temperatures)

Once you've acquired a taste for running, you won't want to stop so quickly.

But what about in winter?

Here, too, there is now the right equipment to go running comfortably.

Therefore, we present: our tips for the right running clothes in winter.

Tip 5: Don't wear running clothes that are too warm, even in winter

Especially in winter, many running beginners tend to wrap up too warm. Surely you also know the old adage that it's easy to catch a cold if you go to the gym dressed too breezily.

And even if there is some truth to this, the right balance is crucial when choosing running clothes:

A body that is wrapped up too warm leads to congested heat in the body. The body reacts accordingly and tries to lower the core temperature. This costs energy and is an additional burden. As a good rule of thumb, you can apply the following tip: When choosing your running clothes, imagine that it is 10 degrees warmer outside than it actually is.

Important here: Include factors such as wind. Many weather portals not only give the actual outdoor temperature, but also the "perceived outdoor temperature". This is often the more helpful information. In the following chapter, we will give you more detailed tips for suitable clothing in icy temperatures.

Tip 6: Running clothes especially for winter

Running in the winter at temperatures around 0 degrees or slightly below zero sounds like an impossibility at first. Add to that snow or slush and you seem to have found a good reason to avoid a running session.

We do not like to destroy illusions at this point, but:

Even for the cold season there is the right running clothing and the fresh air is good for you and strengthens your immune system.

Especially if the ground is not dry or there is slush on the paths, water-repellent running shoes with a non-slip tread or even trail shoes are essential. Otherwise, the running session becomes a dangerous slippery slope.

Equally important and already mentioned in tip 3: The right running clothes for the winter.

The legs are usually less cold, so long tights are also suitable as running pants in winter. If you prefer it warmer, fall back on thermal leggings.

For a good temperature feeling, we rely on the Zwiebellook, especially on the upper body.

As already mentioned, it is recommended here:

Keep the layers tight and make sure you use the right (breathable) material. This ensures that no air gets between the layers and that sweat is transported to the outside.

Remember our tip about the 10°C warmer perceived temperature. Even though it may seem cool at first, after a short time you will feel perfectly comfortable.

Tip 7: Accessories for particularly low temperatures

Following on from the previous tip, here are the appropriate add-ons for your winter running outfit:

Accessories for icy temperatures.

Especially if you want to go running in sub-zero temperatures, it can happen that the cold air hurts your lungs and your face cools down. What helps here: a cloth that you pull over your mouth and nose. This preheats the cold air and protects the corresponding parts of the face from too much cold.

The same applies to fingers. If you have already been running in the cold, you will know it:
Without gloves, your fingers are barely noticeable after a few minutes.
This is due to the fact that the fingers, often in combination with sweat and wind, cool down within a very short time and are no longer properly supplied with blood.

That's why gloves are part of every running outfit in winter. And those who also like it warm around the ears can also provide warmth here with a matching headband or earmuffs.

Extratip: If you want to do something about the problem that headphones only press when using a cap, headband and co., you should take a closer look at our Earebel products. Click here for our running products.

Running clothes for medium temperatures (spring and autumn)

Spring and fall offer great temperatures for going running - not too warm and not too cold. Provided you have the right clothes for jogging.

Tip 8: Running clothes for spring and autumn

Spring and autumn attract with temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees to run. This transitional phase is a great time to start the transition to the colder or warmer season in terms of sportswear.

While you can't go wrong with a short-sleeved T-shirt on the upper body, it's a good idea to switch to ¾ or long tights on the legs.

We can only repeat ourselves:

The fact that the clothes fit tightly is the most important factor.

And even in spring and fall, if the wind or even rain is too strong, a suitable top should be worn. Especially in windy conditions, running vests are advisable. These protect against cooling, but have the advantage that you keep airy arms.

If you like, you can also unpack the running headband to protect your ears from the approaching cold. Who also goes running in summer with beanie to protect the eyes from beading sweat, which can switch accordingly to the winter model.

At this point, we would like to advertise again: If you like to wear a running headband, it is worth taking a look at our Earebel products. Otherwise, the balmy temperatures are perfect for really working out outdoors.

Clothing for running in summer

Running is all the more fun in good weather. However, high temperatures put a spanner in the works for many. Unlike in winter, there is little you can do against the heat, but thanks to suitable running clothes you can at least make it as comfortable as possible.

Our tip for the right outfit for running in the summer.

Tip 9: Clothing for jogging in summer: less is more

For running clothes in the summer and in the sun applies: Less is more.

That makes sense, so we'll just note here that an outfit with good ventilation and breathability is important. Which design you choose in the end - running shirts, singlets, mesh clothing - is entirely up to personal taste.

In rain and wind, the same motto applies as elsewhere: Protect from direct influence by a vest or jacket, otherwise there is a double burden on the body.

Since temperatures are also higher in summer, we automatically sweat more. A sweatband or headband can help protect the eyes from beading sweat.

Conclusion: Have you found the right running clothes?

A lot of input, we know.
